March—what a sneaky month! It’s still the depths of winter wherever I go. But I’m not fooled. Spring will show up one morning when I least expect it, most likely when I’ve stepped off a plane in a different city wearing my winter coat and boots.
I may not be able to predict exactly when the weather will turn, but here are 3 simple things I’m planning on doing so I’m not entirely unprepared when spring finally shows up.
- Check my warm weather outfits to make sure they still work. Right now they’re all squeezed to the back of the closet. I’m going to move them forward, spend 15 minutes looking them over, and make my to-do list. Does everything still fit? Any missing buttons or sagging hems? Do any outfits need tops, shoes, or accessories? Once I know what I’m dealing with, I can address each item on my to-do list at my own pace, instead of rushing to get things done at the last minute.
- Check my calendar to see what spring events I need to be prepared for. April through June tends to be a busy event season for me. I have to give more speeches and presentations than usual, and there are always a few charity galas, graduations, and weddings. Because I don’t wear my “event” outfits regularly I tend to forget what I have—or worse, what I don’t have. This month, I intend to look ahead and identify what outfits I have for each event on my calendar. That way, if I’m missing something, I have plenty of time to buy it.
- Line up some early spring outerwear or accessories. The weather is going to be pretty changeable this month, so I doubt I’ll be wearing full spring outfits until sometime in April. But there are lots of ways to remain weather-appropriate and still look spring-like. For example, Lands End has great travel umbrellas in either yellow or blue polka dots—very cheery on a gray day. The Nordstrom’s website is showing lightweight trench coats in array of bright colors. Because most are pretty inexpensive, you can indulge without worrying whether you’ll get year-round use out of it. And finally scarves are always a good quick fix. I intend to pull out a few colorful ones from the back of my closet to give a spring vibe to my normal black outerwear.
